History
The Mujb’ab’l yol initiative began in 1997, a few months after the signing of the
peace treaty in Guatemala. Mujb’ab’l yol wanted to bring together people that
would strive to help achieve a new, fairer and improved Guatemala.
La Voz Popular
Mujb’ab’l yol followed in the footsteps of what was known as ‘La Voz Popular’
during the armed conflict in Guatemala. La Voz Popular was an illegal radio
station operating in San Marcos during the conflict and was the official voice of
the Revolutionary United Front of Guatemala. For ten years its emissions from
the outskirts of the Tajumulco volcano, provided the everyday people of
Guatemala with an insight into the armed conflict.
The Peace Agreements
La Voz Popular came to an end with the signing of peace agreements in
Guatemala. However, many of La Voz Popular’s employees had worked for ten
years to provide the people of Guatemala with an energetic form of
communication during the conflict and they still see a clear need for an
alternative and reliable means of communication in times of peace. La Voz
Popular had been just this in times of conflict and now a new radio station was
needed to suit the changing times.
Changing Times – Peace Building
Mujb’ab’l yol decided to establish a new radio station to suit the new found
character of Guatemala. These new found characteristics included peace
building, fighting for advanced peace and of course the struggle to ensure that
the conditions of the peace treaties were being adhered to and respected.
It was therefore deemed necessary to create a new means of communication
which, in essence, would be independent, culturally informative, interesting
and primarily a way of keeping society informed and up-to-date with the
extensive labour for peace. The information provided should be objective,
coherent, informative and the radio station should be fully independent and
community orientated in nature.
Informative Message for the Community at Large
On the 4th of October 1998, using the Stereo Tula frequencies in
Quetzaltenango and those of the Buena Nueva in San Marcos, Mujb’ab’l yol went
on air to all those listening in the South West area of Guatemala and delivered
their informative message for the community at large. Centro de Producción
Radiofónica Mujb’ab’l yol – A Meeting Place of Expressions, was founded.
