Legalization of Community Radio Stations in Guatemala
Mujb’ab’l yol has been fighting to legalize community radio stations in
Guatemala since the peace agreement was signed in 1996.

The community radio stations associated to Mujb'ab'l yol teach people (with
special focus on the indigenous) about human rights, freedom of speech, child
abuse, and other social and political themes. They also report on current events
and governmental actions in an effort to raise political consciousness in an
unbiased way.

Under the current Guatemalan Media Law the activities of these community
radio stations are illegal. They are considered 'pirates'. Pressure of the UN on
the Guatemalan government has lead to the installment of a committee to work
on a new Media Law that will give community radio stations their proper space
in the air. Mujb'ab'l yol is one of the main parties to work with this committee.

On August 3, 2009 the proposal for the new Media Law has been delivered to
the Guatemalan Congres
. Its approval will be a great step forward and a dream
come true after many years of struggle for Mujb'ab'l yol and all the community
radio stations active in Guatemala. But there is still a lot of work to be done to
make sure that the new law will pass through the parliament.
