A Strategic Instrument in the Life of Local Communities
We consider community radio stations to be a strategic instrument in the life of
with an alternative to the diverse range of commercial means of communication.
We have the ability to bring about the change needed to promote a more
conscientious and effective form of community collaboration and we also
encourage the social change needed for such development to take place.
Progressive Activists who Promote Community Development
From our point of view a means of communication shouldn’t just be about
distributing and sharing information but rather it should be orientated around
getting close to the community it serves. In this way it can supply the
conditions needed to benefit society as a whole in terms of increased
community awareness and cohesion.
Establishing members of radio stations and other people as pillars of the
community who can promote progressive change, means leaving behind the
image of just being distributors of information to being progressive activists
who promote development within the community.
The Necessary Ingredients
It is only possible for a radio station to become progressive if its workforce have
the political and technical know-how to develop and build up their community-
orientated objectives. It is specifically the political acumen of the workforce
that brings about real development within the community.
Mujb’ab’l yol strives to support this technical and political savoir faire in order
to get alternative means of communication involved in this struggle to bring
about community development. Essentially this means building upon the
technical abilities that many radio stations already possess and providing them
with the necessary analytical skills to get their members, workers and
collaborators involved in the process of community development.
Mujb’ab’l yol facilitates the creation of forms of communication to serve the
Mayan, Garifunas, Xinca and Ladino people of Guatemala and strives to
strengthen a sense of national identity. Through the activities it carries out
Mujb’ab’l yol tries to make freedom of expression and community cohesion the
pillars of a new Guatemala where there is peace, liberty, justice, equality and
well-being throughout the community.
